Staying in the Black Country

The Black Country is made up today of the four metropolitan boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton. Its name is said to come either from the thick coal seam close to the surface or from the soot of the coal, coke, iron, glass, brick and steel works that grew up on it.

The Black Country Living Museum recreates life in the early 20th century. The land around the old Round Oak works became the Merry Hill Shopping Centre and the Waterfront.

In 1785 the 14-mile road between Wolverhampton and Birmingham was described as one continuous town.

Saltwells Local Nature Reserve near Netherton, created in 1981, was the first local nature reserve in the West Midlands county and covers 247 acres. The Netherton Tunnel, opened in 1858, runs 2,768 metres with a towpath on each side.

Our Brierley Hill house is The Merry Hill Lounge: four bedrooms, two bathrooms, 500 Mbps Wi-Fi and free off-road parking with room for vans, sleeping up to 10. The distances below are measured by road from the house.
