Staying near Merry Hill

Merry Hill is the shopping centre in Brierley Hill, in the Dudley borough. It opened in 1985 and has more than 200 shops, with Marks & Spencer, Primark, Next and Asda among the anchor stores.

Beside the mall is the Waterfront, a commercial and leisure complex around a marina on the Dudley No. 1 Canal. The centre has had its own bus station since it opened, with direct buses to Dudley, Halesowen and Stourbridge. A West Midlands Metro extension towards Brierley Hill is under construction, with stops planned at the Waterfront and Merry Hill.

More than 10,000 parking spaces serve the centre. The Eat Central food court was opened in October 2009 by the TV chef James Martin.

For a family staying a few nights the house gives you a full kitchen, a washer dryer and a private back garden, so a shopping trip need not mean eating out every night.

The Round Oak Steelworks was built in 1857 on land overlooking what is now Merry Hill and closed in December 1982 with 1,300 redundancies. Brierley Hill is best known for glass and steel manufacturing. Its Civic Hall on Bank Street hosted several of Slade's first concerts in the early 1970s.

Brierley Hill had a railway station on the Oxford-Worcester-Wolverhampton line from 1850 until 1962. A market grew up along its High Street after a National School opened there in 1835.

Merry Hill is about 2 miles by road from the house, The Merry Hill Lounge. It has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and room for up to 10 guests, so it suits a family weekend, a crew working on the Waterfront offices or a group who would rather share a kitchen than book a row of hotel rooms.
