Staying near Quarry Bank

Quarry Bank is part of the Dudley borough, where its long, steep High Street, which gives the place its name, runs down to meet the neighbouring town of Cradley.

It became a separate civil parish in 1894 and was merged with the Brierley Hill Urban District in 1934. Mount Pleasant Primary School opened in the west of the old village in 1888, Thorns Collegiate Academy opened in 1977 and the 1st Quarry Bank Scout Group was registered in 1922.

From the house, Merry Hill is about 2 miles by road, Cradley Heath station is under a mile away and Stourbridge town centre is about 3 miles away. Two bathrooms, a washer dryer and a private back garden make it an easy base for a week or a month.

Brierley Hill, which Quarry Bank joined in 1934, is best known for glass and steel manufacturing. Its first religious building, St Michael's Chapel, was built in 1765 by public subscription. The Civic Hall on Bank Street hosted several of Slade's first concerts in the early 1970s.

Saltwells House, a historic house in the area, was demolished in 2011. Russells Hall Hospital is about 4 miles by road from the house.

Saltwells Local Nature Reserve, created in 1981 as the first in the West Midlands county, covers 247 acres including Saltwells Wood, an 18th-century plantation. It takes its name from the salty water that welled up in the old mine workings.

Quarry Bank is under a mile by road from the house, The Merry Hill Lounge, a four-bedroom home with two bathrooms and free off-road parking. Merry Hill Shopping Centre, developed between 1984 and 1989, is close by, as is the Waterfront.
