Staying near Netherton

Netherton is a Black Country district about two miles south of Dudley, bounded by nature reserves to the east and west. The chainmakers N. Hingley & Sons made the anchors for the ocean liner RMS Titanic here; anchor making began in 1848 and the works were set up on the Dudley No. 2 Canal in 1852.

St Andrew's Church was consecrated in 1830, Netherton Park was laid out in about 1900 and the Bumble Hole Local Nature Reserve is reclaimed industrial land beside the Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal. The A459 Halesowen Road is the main route through.

Netherton had 15,017 residents at the 2011 census and the Dudley No. 2 Canal still runs through it.

Dudley town centre, two miles to the north, had 79,379 residents at the 2011 census. Most of the Dudley Canal passes beneath the town in the Dudley Tunnel, which can only be reached by boat.

Russells Hall Hospital is about 4 miles by road from the house and the Black Country Living Museum is about 5 miles away.

The Netherton Tunnel opened on 20 August 1858. At 2,768 metres long it was built 27 feet wide, with a towpath on each side, so narrowboats could pass in both directions. Saltwells Local Nature Reserve, in the Netherton area, covers 247 acres and was the first such reserve in the West Midlands county.

Netherton is about 3 miles by road from the house, The Merry Hill Lounge in Brierley Hill, which has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and free off-road parking.
