Staying near Cradley Heath

Cradley Heath is a Black Country town in Sandwell, about two miles north-west of Halesowen, with the River Stour forming its southern boundary with Cradley. It grew on chainmaking and nailmaking. In the summer of 1910 around a thousand local women, led by Mary Macarthur, took part in the ten-week Chainmakers' Strike.

The Mary Macarthur Memorial Gardens and the old Market Hall, more than a century old, are still in the town. The High Street keeps the dip left by a mining subsidence in 1914. The Cradley Heath Heathens raced speedway here from 1947 until 1995.

Cradley Heath is about three miles south of Dudley and eight miles west of Birmingham, so the interchange is a practical way into the city for guests staying at the house without a car.

Cradley Heath was one of the communities brought into the borough of Rowley Regis in 1933. Today it is part of Sandwell, the metropolitan borough formed on 1 April 1974.

Halesowen town centre is about 4 miles by road from the house and Merry Hill is about 2 miles away.

Cradley Heath station and the bus station beside it form the Cradley Heath Interchange, with West Midlands Railway trains to Birmingham Snow Hill and Moor Street, Stourbridge Junction and Worcester. The station is under a mile by road from the house, The Merry Hill Lounge, which sleeps up to 10 with free off-road parking.
