View the houseAmblecote lies immediately north of Stourbridge, bordering Audnam, Quarry Bank and Wollaston. From the 17th century, after the arrival of Huguenot migrants, it became home to glassworks including Thomas Webb. With Wordsley it formed the main centre of the Stourbridge glass industry, now known as the Glass Quarter.
The War Memorial Athletic Ground is home to Stourbridge Cricket Club and to Stourbridge Football Club, known as the Glassboys. Holy Trinity Church, begun in 1841, is built entirely of yellow firebricks.
Amblecote was historically part of the parish of Oldswinford but, unlike the rest of the parish, lay in Staffordshire. It became a civil parish in 1866 and its ward had 13,393 residents at the 2011 census.
Stourbridge, immediately to the south, has the Stourbridge Town branch line, believed to be the shortest railway branch line in Europe at just over half a mile. King Edward VI College there was founded in 1552 and became a sixth form college in 1976.
Stourbridge town centre is about 3 miles by road from the house and Kingswinford is about 5 miles away.
Stourbridge Football Club was founded in 1876 as Stourbridge Standard and plays in the Southern League Premier Division Central. Its Amblecote ground holds 2,035 and in 2016-17 the club reached the third round of the FA Cup for the first time.
The club is nicknamed the Glassboys because of the town's traditional link with the cut glass industry.
