Staying near Sedgley

Sedgley is a town in the north of the Dudley borough, on the A459 between Wolverhampton and Dudley. Its Beacon Hill rises to 237 metres above sea level.

All Saints' Church was completed in 1829 for the Earl of Dudley, the Bull Ring in the town centre takes its name from the bull baiting held there before 1835 and the Sarah Hughes Brewery was founded in 1921. The town grew on coal and limestone, producing iron and brick by the 18th century.

Baggeridge Colliery opened in 1902 and helped the town grow quickly in the early 20th century. Sedgley became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley in 1974.

Dudley, to the south, has the 13th-century ruins of Dudley Castle, a Grade I listed structure. The Earl of Dudley turned the castle grounds into a zoo in 1937.

Sedgley ward had 12,087 residents at the 2011 census. Wolverhampton city centre is about 10 miles by road from the house.

On top of Beacon Hill stands the Sedgley Beacon tower, a Grade II listed tower put up in 1846 by Lord Wrottesley for astronomy. From the summit Wolverhampton, Walsall and Birmingham are all visible, as is the Staffordshire, Shropshire and Welsh countryside to the west.

Beacon Hill was historically one of a series of high points where a fire would be lit as a signal in times of war or turmoil.

Gospel End, once part of the same manor, is now in South Staffordshire.

Sedgley is about 7 miles by road from the house, The Merry Hill Lounge in Brierley Hill, a four-bedroom home with free off-road parking that suits contractors working between Dudley and Wolverhampton.
