Frank Whittle tested early jet engines with his firm Power Jets at the BTH works in Lutterworth in the late 1930s and the 1940s. The town museum shows papers from those years and a replica of his Gloster E.28/39 stands on a roundabout south of the town.
Lutterworth Grammar School dates from 1630, when the town had only a few hundred people. Lutterworth College, for 11 to 18-year-olds, now uses the building of the short-lived Sir Frank Whittle Studio School for its sixth form.
