John Wycliffe was rector of Lutterworth from 1374 to 1384 and is said to have worked on the first English Bible there. The old centre, with its coaching inns and church, is easy to walk since the A4303 bypass opened in 1999.
Three stations once served the area. Lutterworth's own, on the Great Central Main Line, ran from 1899 to 1969; Ullesthorpe and Lutterworth closed in 1962 and Welford and Kilworth in 1966. Rugby is now the nearest.
The thatched Shambles was a pub from 1791 to 1840 and has been again since 1982. Leicester lies about 12 miles north.
