George Eliot Hospital, on the outskirts of Nuneaton, opened in 1948 and is run by its own trust. From a single site it covers emergency and planned care, maternity, children's, diagnostic and therapy services for north Warwickshire, south-west Leicestershire and north Coventry.
When the Manor Hospital closed in July 1993, George Eliot took over the town's emergency department, theatres and orthopaedic wards. Its education centre, GETEC, opened in July 2005. Many wards are named after characters in George Eliot's novels, Adam Bede and Felix Holt among them.
The trust's work spreads beyond the hospital, with community services across Coventry, Warwickshire and Leicestershire, sexual health and community dentistry for the whole of Warwickshire and the Blue Sky Sexual Assault Referral Centre.
