Silk ribbon weavers worked in three-storey top-shops in Nuneaton from the 17th century and the Warwickshire coalfield's output rose nearly tenfold between 1860 and 1913. Mining was recorded as early as 1338.
The railways arrived in stages: the Trent Valley line in 1847, a branch to Coventry in 1850 and the Birmingham to Leicester line in 1864. Bricks, tiles, beer, hats, leather goods and engineering followed from the 1880s.
