The Industrial Revolution largely passed Warwick by, leaving little but hat making in the early 19th century. Long contracts today are mostly in offices, research and the business parks.
Travel is easy for weekends home. Warwick station, just north of the centre, has trains to Leamington Spa, London, Birmingham and Stratford. Warwick Parkway opened on the western edge of town in 2000.
The town grew slowly, from 5,592 people in 1801 to 10,952 in 1851. Trams crossed the three-arch Portobello Bridge of 1831 between Warwick and Leamington from 1881 to 1930. For evening walks, narrowboats moor on the restored Saltisford Arm of the Grand Union Canal.
