Southam's Holy Well, first recorded in 998, is a Scheduled Ancient Monument where spring water pours through carved stone gargoyles into the Stowe; its paths were restored with Lottery money between 2005 and 2007.
The town claims the first battle of the Civil War: a skirmish outside Southam on 23 August 1642. Charles I stayed at the Manor House before Edgehill. Cromwell came through with 7,000 troops in 1645.
The Old Mint pub, a grade II building of the early 16th century, is where the king's coins were struck to pay his army. St James's church, grade I, dates from the 14th century.
