HS2 passes immediately south of Southam on its route between London and Birmingham, with no station on that stretch, so civils and rail crews are at work in the fields beside the town.
The Blue Lias limestone under Southam fed a cement works a mile north of the town, once served by rail and a short arm of the Grand Union Canal. Rugby Cement moved production to Rugby in 2000 and the works came down in 2011, but the quarry is still worked.
An industrial estate south of the town is a significant local employer. Junction 12 of the M40, about 7.5 miles south, also serves the Jaguar Land Rover Gaydon Centre.
