View propertyIndustry came late to Daventry. British Timken opened a large bearing factory in 1955, which closed in 1993, though its distribution centre ran on to 2000; the first stretch of the M1 gave the town a direct road to London.
From 1961 the town took Birmingham overspill. Birmingham City Council bought nearly 1,000 acres for homes and industrial estates. By 1972 more than 1,000 families had moved in alongside new industries.
DIRFT, about six miles north at junction 18 of the M1, runs three rail freight terminals on the West Coast Main Line and plans DIRFT IV, roughly 5.5 million square feet more east of the motorway.
