Leamington was built as a spa, but the Warwick and Napton Canal of 1799 brought coal, pig iron and limestone and a run of stove foundries followed. The Eagle Foundry, dating from at least 1851, still makes Rangemaster Aga stoves.
Ford's Imperial Foundry cast engine blocks until 2008. Automotive Products, which opened a factory in the south of the town in 1928, was still working there in 2009 on a smaller scale.
Today's light industry and offices cluster on the Althorpe Street, Queensway, Shires Gate and Sydenham estates. The Rosalind Franklin laboratory opened in 2021, designed for hundreds of thousands of samples a day and expected to bring up to 1,500 jobs.
