View propertyThe railway made Kenilworth an industrial town for a while. After the Coventry to Leamington line opened in 1844 came tanning, brick making and chemical works, while market gardens grew tomatoes and strawberries. Before that the town had a name for horn combs.
Birmingham and Coventry industrialists built houses near the station, drawing the town south from its castle. A local whitesmith, Edward Langley Fardon, rode the first bicycle with wire-spoked wheels and rubber tyres from Warwick Road to Leek Wootton in 1869.
HS2 is the big job today. Between Kenilworth and Burton Green the line passes through a twin-box tunnel of about 700 metres, now structurally complete. The Kenilworth Greenway is to be put back on top as a path towards Balsall Common.
