Hinckley made its name in hosiery after Joseph Iliffe brought the first framework knitting machine to the town in the seventeenth century. The trade has shrunk since the war, though a few textile firms remain. Hinckley & District Museum keeps the old machines in former knitters' cottages.
Warehouses arrived with the roads. The A5 and the M69 meet at the town, linking it with Coventry, Leicester, the M1 and the M6; Coventry and Leicester are each about 12 miles away.
Factories still run. Triumph Motorcycles, founded in 1902, has built its machines in Hinckley since 1990. Hammonds, the fitted furniture maker founded in the town in 1926, employs more than 850 people in two factories.
Our nearest house to Hinckley is Sullivan Heights, about 11 miles by road, with Stoke Lodge and Stoke House next. Each house is let whole to the crew and invoiced to the contractor before arrival.
