From engines to battery packs

JLR's plant at i54, beside the M54 north of Wolverhampton, was built as its Engine Manufacturing Centre. It is now the Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre. JLR's careers page lists battery production there alongside its petrol and diesel engines.

JLR said in May 2024 that it had spent £356 million turning the factory electric, installing equipment to make battery packs and other electric components. The Express & Star put the workforce at more than 1,000 at the time. By September 2026 the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce was reporting battery packs made there alongside combustion engines.

The plant was one of the first two JLR sites to restart after the cyber incident, on 8 October 2025, together with the Battery Assembly Centre at Hams Hall.

The Merry Hill Lounge, our house in Brierley Hill, is about 22 miles by road from the plant. It has off-road parking for vans as well as cars and 500 Mbps Wi-Fi for evening reports.

It sleeps 10 across four bedrooms, so a commissioning crew can share one house and one pro-forma invoice. Our Coventry homes suit teams that also visit Whitley or Gaydon on the same trip.
