The NEC accommodation problem
Anyone who's tried to book accommodation for a busy NEC show knows the drill. The Hilton NEC is fully booked six months out. The Crowne Plaza NEC hits £280/night during big events. Premier Inn and Holiday Inn around Solihull jump to £200+ during Crufts, the Clothes Show, Autosport, or the Horse of the Year Show. And if you leave it late, you end up in the outskirts paying Birmingham centre rates for a Premier Inn in Redditch.
This article exists because a lot of event visitors don't realise there's another option: Coventry. It's 15–20 minutes from the NEC by road, well-connected by rail (NEC is on the West Coast Main Line via Birmingham International), and accommodation prices don't spike for NEC events because most NEC visitors assume they have to stay in Birmingham or Solihull.
The commute reality check
Coventry to NEC takes 15–20 minutes by car via the A45 or the A46 / M42. Both roads can get busy around show times (particularly on exit days) but the reverse commute from Coventry is usually better than trying to drive through Birmingham or Solihull traffic.
By train: Coventry to Birmingham International is 7–10 minutes on the West Coast Main Line. Birmingham International station sits directly attached to the NEC — you walk across a covered bridge into the halls. Trains run every 10–15 minutes. This is often faster door-to-door than driving during peak show times.
Taxi: Coventry to NEC costs roughly £25–£35 one-way depending on traffic. Uber usually cheaper. For a 3-day event with 6 round trips, you'd spend £150–£200 on taxis — still less than the accommodation price difference between a Coventry house and a Solihull hotel.
Price comparison: Crufts week 2026
A concrete example. March 2026, Crufts (Thursday — Sunday). 4 nights:
- Hilton NEC: not available (books out a year ahead)
- Crowne Plaza NEC: £320/night × 4 = £1,280 for 1 room
- Premier Inn Solihull: £185/night × 4 = £740 for 1 room
- Holiday Inn Birmingham Airport NEC: £220/night × 4 = £880 for 1 room
- Coventry Premier Inn: £89/night × 4 = £356 for 1 room
- Maine Stays Coventry (whole house, sleeps 6–10): £160–£200/night × 4 = £640–£800 total
For a solo visitor, Coventry Premier Inn beats everything. For a group of 3+, Maine Stays whole-house wins decisively — you're paying £640–£800 total for up to 10 people versus £3,000+ if each person books their own Solihull Premier Inn.
Which events it works for
Coventry as an NEC base works brilliantly for events that don't run late or need pre-show prep at the venue. Things like:
- Trade shows with 10am-6pm show hours (most of them)
- Consumer shows like Crufts, Clothes Show, Spring Fair
- Conferences at the ICC or NEC conference centre
- Autosport, Classic Motor Show, Caravan & Motorhome Show
- Any event where you're attending as a visitor rather than exhibiting
Which events it doesn't work for
Coventry is less ideal when the event has any of these characteristics:
- You're exhibiting and need to be on-site at 7am for stand setup
- It's a concert at the Utilita Arena NEC that ends after 11pm (though trains run late)
- You need to entertain clients with evening drinks in the Birmingham business-district bars
- The event has substantial evening networking at NEC hotels that you need to attend
For exhibitors doing early set-up or late breakdown, a NEC-area hotel is probably worth the premium. For everyone else, Coventry is a rational choice.
What Coventry offers that Solihull/Birmingham area doesn't
Beyond just price, a few reasons to prefer Coventry specifically:
- Coventry city centre has been regenerated over the last 5 years — new cathedral quarter, new restaurants, reopened Coventry Cathedral
- Serviced accommodation is more common in Coventry than Solihull, so full-house options exist for groups
- Parking is free or cheap almost everywhere in Coventry (unlike NEC-area hotels which charge £15+/night)
- The city is small enough that evening food options are walkable from most central accommodation
- Transport links are excellent — Coventry rail station connects to Birmingham (10 min), London Euston (60 min), and Rugby/Northampton
How to book for peak NEC events
Coventry accommodation doesn't spike for NEC events because most visitors don't consider it. That means booking window is generous — you can often book Crufts accommodation in Coventry 2 weeks out at standard rates when Solihull has been fully booked since January.
Standard advice: identify your event, check NEC-area rates, compare against Coventry equivalents (both hotel and serviced accommodation). For solo visitors on 1–2 day events, a Coventry Premier Inn works. For groups of 3+ or stays of 3+ nights, serviced accommodation in Coventry is typically the cheapest credible option.
