Merry Hill Shopping Centre: a visitor's guide
Merry Hill in Brierley Hill has around 217 stores, more than 10,000 free parking spaces, the Eat Central food court, a leisure quarter with Hollywood Bowl and a 10-screen Odeon on its retail park. Merry Hill is about 2 miles by road from our house, The Merry Hill Lounge.
The big names
Merry Hill was built between 1985 and 1990 and now has around 217 stores. Marks & Spencer, Primark, Asda and Next anchor the centre, joined by Harvey Norman, which chose Merry Hill for its first store in Great Britain in part of the old Debenhams unit. H&M, TK Maxx, Sports Direct and Boots are among the other well-known names.
Marks & Spencer merged its two Merry Hill stores into one large shop, which opened on 27 November 2025. Line-ups change, so check Merry Hill's own website before making a special trip for one shop.
A short history
Merry Hill was built on Merry Hill Farm (the last working urban farm in the West Midlands) and on land beside the Round Oak Steelworks, which closed in 1982. The first stores opened in 1985 and the final phase was completed in 1989.
It collected some firsts along the way. In 1986 it had the first free-standing Pizza Hut in the UK and the largest Texas Homecare store. A separate 10-screen cinema opened in November 1988 and Marks & Spencer opened on 23 October 1990. Plans for a 2,000-foot tower, with a hotel at its base and an observatory at the top, were dropped in 1992.
Eating out
Eat Central, the food court on the upper mall, was opened on 22 October 2009 by the TV chef James Martin. Restaurants around the centre include Nando's, Slim Chickens, Wagamama and Wingstop.
How big it is
The main centre has about 1,671,000 square feet of shopping space and room for five anchor stores. Eat Central opened with 16 food outlets in its main court and three two-storey restaurant units behind it, so there is a choice whether you want a quick lunch between shops or a sit-down meal.
Bowling, games and films
A refurbishment gave Merry Hill a leisure quarter with Hollywood Bowl and a cluster of restaurants. The former Debenhams store was split three ways, with Harvey Norman, an XF Gyms and a Funstation games venue taking the space.
Across on the retail park is a 10-screen Odeon. When it opened it was the first multiplex cinema in the Dudley borough.
The retail park
Beyond the main mall, the retail park has larger stores including Wren Kitchens, The Range, Currys, B&M Home & Garden, B&Q and Matalan, with a Lidl that opened in 2022.
Parking and getting there
The centre has more than 10,000 free parking spaces. While Metro works continue, the Midland Metro Alliance has asked visitors to use the Pedmore Road and The Boulevard entrances rather than Level Street and Embankment. Trams are due to reach Merry Hill in 2028.
The Waterfront next door
Beside the mall is the Waterfront, a marina with bars and restaurants, the studios of Black Country Radio and the headquarters and control room of West Midlands Ambulance Service. The Dudley No 1 Canal runs through it and along the edge of the shopping centre before dropping down Delph Locks.
